In a groundbreaking effort to combat
homelessness, the state of Kerala has introduced an innovative program called
the Livelihood Inclusion Financial Empowerment (LIFE) Mission. This
comprehensive initiative aims to provide every homeless resident in Kerala with
a place they can truly call home.
The LIFE Mission represents a holistic
approach to community development, extending far beyond the simple construction
of houses.
Key Components of the LIFE Mission:
1. Free Housing: The cornerstone of the
initiative is the provision of no-cost homes to those currently without
shelter.
2. Community Development: Alongside
housing, the mission focuses on building robust infrastructure to support these
new communities.
3. Economic Growth: The program
incorporates strategies to boost local economies, with a particular emphasis on
agricultural advancement and sustainable resource management.
4. Phased Implementation: To ensure
effectiveness and manageability, the mission is being rolled out in carefully
planned stages.
The Kerala State budget has allocated Rs
1,132 crore to the LIFE housing scheme, with the goal of constructing 4.25 lakh
houses by the end of this fiscal year. As of February 2024, over 3.7 lakh
houses have already been built. To speed up the construction process, the
government is also introducing long-term loan schemes.
