The government of India has started a new
housing scheme called the Affordable Rental Housing Scheme 2024. This scheme is
an important part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan (Self-Reliant India
Mission) launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The main goal is to provide
affordable rental housing options for poor people living in cities.
Many migrants and daily wage workers
struggle to find decent and affordable places to live when they come to cities
for work. The Affordable Rental Housing Scheme 2024 aims to address this issue.
It will use vacant government housing units or construct new affordable rental
housing units in urban areas through partnerships with private companies or
public agencies.
These rental housing units will be small
but functional. One-bedroom units will be around 30 square meters, while
two-bedroom units will be approximately 60 square meters. However, they will
have all the basic amenities like bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms to ensure a
comfortable living space.
Beneficiaries of the ARHC Scheme
Income Eligibility:
Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and
Low-Income Group (LIG): Households with annual incomes ranging from Rs.
3,00,001 to Rs. 6,00,000 fall under this category and are eligible for ARHC
benefits.
Urban Population:
Migrants: Individuals who have relocated to
urban areas for employment or educational pursuits can leverage this scheme to
find suitable housing.
Urban Poor: Existing residents of urban
environments facing housing affordability challenges can benefit from ARHCs.
Supporting Livelihoods:
Essential Service Providers: Street
vendors, rickshaw pullers, and those offering critical services within the city
are eligible for ARHC benefits.
Industrial Workers: The scheme encompasses
individuals employed in factories or other industrial settings.
The ARHC scheme extends its support to a
wider range of individuals, including:
Market/Trade Association Workers: Members
of market associations or trade unions can inquire about ARHC eligibility.
Essential Service Personnel: Those employed
in the education, healthcare, and hospitality sectors can access affordable
housing through ARHCs.
Long-Term Visitors: Individuals residing in
the city for extended periods can find stable housing options through ARHCs.
Students: The scheme prioritizes students,
ensuring their focus remains on academics rather than housing concerns.
Vulnerable Sections: Other vulnerable

benefit from ARHCs.
